The Li-Fi (Light Fidelity) is the best solution of the problems are raising in the path of introducing 5G. Light is also a part of electromagnetic spectrum but at a much higher frequency and carries the energy much faster than radio waves. So Li-Fi can be the upcoming alternative of RF.

What is Li-Fi?
As rough description we can say Li-Fi is a thought of Light based Wi-Fi
Li-Fi is a mobile Wireless technology that uses light instead if RF to transfer data. The light intensity is so fast that human eye cannot imagine to follow. In the Li-Fi technology light(LED) illumination is used for transferring the data. Simply it’s the bidirectional networked high speed mobile communication by transferring data through light. As compared to a single router the Li-Fi technology have the capability to cover a wider area. Light can be everywhere you want so, the unavailability of radio spectrum will not affect the usability of the LI-Fi technology.

The German scientist Prof. Harald Hass coined the term “Li-Fi” at TED Global Talk in the year of 2011. In this event he introduced the idea of “wireless data communication from every light”.
How Li-Fi technology is better option?

Speed and Bandwidth: Light has 10,000 times greater frequency range than radio waver and the waves is much faster to carry the energy. LED lights will help to get a high rate of data as they have very high intensity. A high rate of rate in Gbps can be achieved for the mobile devices.
Less complicacy: Radio Frequency communication is a lot complicated and costly because it requires antennas, radio circuits and complex receivers, whereas Li-Fi is much simpler and used direct modulation system just like those.
No Interference: RF can achieve interference from a variety of devices like wireless phone, waves and many more Wi-Fi sources. Li-I is restricted in that area where light can reach and not beyond it.. So easily we can use it in RF restricted areas as hospitals, aeroplanes and power plants.
Security: Data security is the main factor when you are using wireless communication. RF signals can easily pass through walls and can picked by another person. Light can be secured in a precious location and user authentication.
Localization: Li-Fi enable lights contains a unique IP address, and it’s fully networked. Simply the basic lights can be deployed as Li-Fi networks in a single location.
Reliability: It has enough reliability, because it offers interference free communication and much higher data density. Most importantly it also assure security which is a primary need.
How does it works?

Li-Fi is a Virtual Light Communication system which works in a very high speed. The technology uses normal LED’s to communicate and offers high speed of data transfer (up to 225 Gigabits/second). The important components of a Li-fi system are photodiode, LDR system and receiver and transmitter circuit. There LED permits the data transfer as the binary code form without getting recognized by human eye or any fluctuation in light.

Most importantly Li-Fi system have two sections namely transmitter and receiver for communication purpose namely the transmitter and the receiver.
The transmitter section includes SBC (System basis chip), timer circuit or switching transistor and a LED bulb that modulates the input signal within a specific time period and sends the data in binary form.The input at the transmitter end can be of different forms that icludes video, text image and a lot more. The timer circuit that is used in the transmitter section of the Li-Fi system is used to create the LED flash. The time intervals that is required between between the beats enables the data in form of flashes.
The receiver end consists of a photodiode and a decoder SBC that receives the data in the form of LED flash transmitted from transmitter end. The amplifier in hardware section receves the signal and amlifies it to give the transmitted data as output.
Applications of Li-Fi
- The drawback o Wi-Fi is evident in underwater communication as radio waves are absorbable in water. Whereas Li-Fi facilitate underwater communication aas light travels a long distance under water.
- Li-Fi provide a network for the medical instruments within a hospital that is more secure and safe thus enabling better deployment.
- In explosive hazardous situations the safety and management is a great issue. Therefore the use of electrical instruments like mobile are restricted. This Li-Fi technology provides an alternative as data is passed by configuring networks o data.
- Technology is growing smarter and a smart home is also in demand. Li-Fi technology enables secure, simple, trustworthy, secured technology that can be used to make your home wireless. The attack that are caused by the middle man in other Wi-Fi technology is not here.
- This is proved to be an excellent enterprise solution as in a populated office as the interference is reduced by the direction of light propagation.
- Li-Fi provides a reliable and real-time management in Industry 4.0 environment that will b free from interference.
There is a he potential in the Li-Fi technology in the field o wireless communication. Many more researches are going on this field and there is a huge scope in the coming future. Several drawbacks of wireless technology like less availability of radio spectrum, Interference, speed, security and many more can be overcomes with the use of Li-Fi technology. It also helps in the invention of many other technologies that will make a better world.
